The WEWP is a three years' (2008-2011) project which is funded by the Brooke Hospital for Animals UK with the monitoring and supervision support from the Brooke Hospital for Animals, India. The main problem addressed on this project is poor equine welfare condition in the country due to insufficient skill and knowledge in equine health care and management among owners, Veterinarians and Veterinary technicians. AHTCS is implementing this project in seven districts of Nepal namely Kaski, Lamjung, Parbat, Myagdi, Baglung, Bara and Parsa.

Project goal

The goal of the project is to improve the working equine welfare situation by encouraging the community participation and establishing linkage among the local systems for sustainable working equine welfare in the project districts.

Project purpose

The project has the following purposes:

1. To improve the knowledge of equine owners in practicing improved equine welfare activities (standard of care as prescribed by the Brooke).

2. To improve the quality equine health care and management situation by providing skills and knowledge in equine health care and management to the owners/handlers/technicians/governments personnel/local health practitioners etc.

3. To encourage the community participation and other stakeholders involvement in sustainable equine welfare by creating awareness among them.

Main areas of activities

Ø      Awareness creation & sensitization about the equine welfare among the equine owners/handlers, farriers, shoe installers, feed sellers, government officials, veterinary technicians etc.

Ø      Capacity development and skill enhancement in equine health care and management among technical manpower

Ø      Welfare groups formation

Ø      Emergency and periodic treatment and preventive care of equines as needed

Ø      Capacity development and skill enhancement among stakeholders (Farriers, shoe installers etc.)

Ø      Strengthening of equine welfare activities through welfare groups mobilization
